According to Tom, “this was the incentive to tidy up my template a bit, and think more about ad placement.”
He just started by placing Big Rectangle on above the fold at the top right corner which is getting a large number of clicks. But, the main earner is a Medium Rectangle which he placed under his article. Its getting clicks more that he imagined. He also opted for Image Ads so that the ads will compete with each other to get him the maximum. He also added link units at the top of every page and blended the ads by removing the borders and matching the unit’s background with his blog’s background color. Not only that, he also twicked his template so that the highest performing ad unit comes first in his page’s source code.
Tom recommends that other publishers “follow the optimization suggestions as long as they leave you with a site you’re happy with. If you lose confidence in your own site, you’ll irritate your audience and lose interest in what you’re doing. But at the same time, make sure you watch your statistics, so you know what works and what doesn’t.”
